Attractions

One of the major sights to see in Dijon is St Benigne’s Cathedral. A classic example of the gothic architecture typical of this region, the Cathedral is named after the Saint thought to be buried in a 2nd century sarcophagus – the remains of which are still on show for visitors to see. The Palais des Ducs is the old residence of the famous Dukes of Burgundy, who built the city. Climbing the 316 steps to the top of the Tour Philippe le Bon, which is part of the palace, will give spectacular views over the city, and allow visitors to see the different architectural styles first-hand. The striking Notre-Dame Church is decorated with ornate gargoyles, and the columns are completed with the 14th century Jacquemart clock, which still tells the time accurately.

Shopping

One of the many local products available to buy is the famous Dijon mustard. A regular market in the city centre sells all sorts of local produce, while auction houses are ideal places to pick up antiques and art work. There are also several antiques shops on rue Verrerie, which is located behind Notre-Dame. Being surrounded by wine regions, Dijon has a great deal of excellent wines available for sale.
