Why You Should Really Buy Car Hire Excess Insurance

excess insurance
When you hire a car, wherever you are in the world, you will usually need some kind of excess insurance. As standard, car rental companies will normally include high excess levels in the policy, for example £500 or even higher. This means that if you have an accident and damage the car, you will have to pay that amount upfront, with the car hire company paying the rest. This could end up very costly, making excess insurance invaluable. However, the insurance that is offered by the car rental company if often very expensive, and can leave out certain parts of the car or even only minimally lower the excess.

It is important to research thoroughly what is included in your car hire, looking for terms such as Collision Damage Waiver (normally included, however is not comprehensive), Theft Protection (insurance if the car is stolen), and Personal Accident Insurance (for injury to yourself or other passengers).

One of the best ways of making sure you are entirely covered for any eventuality is by taking out an excess insurance policy from a third party company. There are now companies that specialise in offering these types of insurance, and they usually provide a much greater level of cover. They will include cover for damage caused to the windscreen, roof, tyres, and more which car hire companies will often not offer protection for, as well as offering cover for a wider range of situations, for example putting the wrong fuel in the car. Even better, if you hire cars on a regular basis, just like travel policies you can opt for an annual policy or one based on the length of your trip.

Of course, the best thing about them is they are substantially cheaper than doing it through the car hire company!
