Oviedo

Oviedo is the geographic, political, administrative and cultural centre of Asturias. It is located amongst the foothills of the Naranco and neighbouring mountains and only 26km (16 miles) from the coast. The temperature in the summer is pleasant, when much of Spain is unbearably hot. It is a good base for excursions along the Costa Verde.

Within the city there is fine gothic style cathedral and the small churches of Santa Maria del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo, examples of 9th century Asturias pre-Romanesque art.

Eating Out

In the restaurants of Oviedo seafood from the Bay of Biscay features on the menu and other Asturian favourites are la fabada (stew made from large beans), locally produced cheeses and cider.
