Florence

Florence is an historic city with strong roots in Renaissance culture, which is reflected in the architectural style that can be found everywhere. Many of the medieval buildings that make the city so special are intact, meaning that a walk through the city can feel like walking back in time.

Attractions

With so much history and such a range of beautiful monuments and architecture, it’s hard to run out of things to do on a visit here. The 13th century cathedral, or Duomo, with its imposing dome and spectacular façade, is definitely worth seeing. The many changes that have been made to this impressive building through the ages presents visitors with a veritable timeline of Tuscan architecture. There are many palaces in Florence, the most typical example of Tuscan palaces is the Medici Riccardi Palace. For a more extravagant example of Tuscan architecture, visit the Pitti Palace. Other cultural visits include a range of museums dotted around the city centre, and the Ponte Vecchio – the bridge that runs over the River Arno.

Shopping

Shopping in Florence is a fascinating experience – a trip down to Via Maggio or Via dei Fossi will reveal an antique shopper’s paradise. Ponte Vecchio is an excellent destination for those looking for exclusive jewellery shops. Florence is home to some superb leather shops, most of which can be found in Santa Croce. There is an extensive range of clothing, both designer and high street, throughout Florence, with something to suit everyone.

Nightlife and Eating out

Being part of the Tuscan region, Florence is famed for its excellent Italian wines, and so wine is an important part of eating out here. Tuscan food is basic Italian cuisine, ranging from meat dishes flavoured with herbs, to pasta and bruschetta. Game and Italian cheese are important element to Tuscan dishes also. The best place to go for reasonably priced traditional cuisine is the Piazza Santa Maria Novella. Nightlife in Florence is varied; with clubs playing a range of music from techno, to soul and funk.
